BOTOX® Cosmetic, or OnabotulinumtoxinA, is a naturally occurring protein that blocks muscle function commonly used to reduce or eliminate the appearance of facial wrinkles and lines or rejuvenate the face and neck. It is exceptionally safe, injected millions of times a year with almost no problems when properly used. It was, in fact, developed for use in children with eye muscle spasm and used for that purpose for many years until its cosmetic uses were discovered. It is injected into the muscles causing wrinkles or cosmetic problems in the face to reverse these problems. BOTOX® injections block nerve impulses, weakening the muscles to relax them and give the face the desired rejuvenated look. We use it most commonly:
We do so to:
We do the procedure in a Spa environment and use topical numbing for the injections to reduce discomfort. Each injection usually lasts 3-6 months. When repeated several times each time before muscle function recovers over about 1 – 1 ½ years, allowing the muscle to atrophy, you may be able thereafter to go a year or so between injections. It does not, however, reduce or eliminate lines that are etched in the skin. To treat these, we use Botox® to eliminate the muscle contraction responsible for creating the lines and a filler to reduce or eliminate the lines. Both are necessary to accomplish rejuvenation of etched lines.
BOTOX® may also be useful for reducing or eliminating migraine headaches, excessive sweating, and eye and neck muscle spasms.
