Are Botox Injections Really Safe?

Wednesday, January 15th, 2014

Every year, thousands of people elect to get Botox injected into problem areas for cosmetic reasons. Typically, these are done to smooth out wrinkles and fine lines, or to treat a droopy part of the face and give it a lift. Botox is even used in a procedure called a ‘Liquid Facelift’ to give the effect of a facelift without surgery – and does so very well! But one question that is often asked before receiving Botox injections is often “are they really safe?”

Botox is, by nature, actually a poison called botulinum toxin type A. Although this may seem alarming, it is actually what ‘relaxes’ the face and causes the muscles to freeze – and the wrinkles to disappear! But how can injecting a poison into your skin be okay? While Botox is poisonous in large quantities, the stuff you’re getting at your doctor’s office is purified in a lab to be safe, and administered in very small doses. It doesn’t take much Botox to get rid of wrinkles.

Botox, which is measured in units of the mixture, is used in very limited amounts. Depending on what you’re trying to achieve, your doctor may spread out one unit into smaller injections over a wide area of your face, or you may get a few bigger injections to isolate a stubborn muscle.

As with any medical procedure however, there are always risks. Botox, especially in the cosmetic industry, doesn’t come with many though. The most important factor when getting Botox is actually your doctor! Be sure to research him or her, ask tons of questions about how they will perform the procedure, and always ask for some examples of their previous work. Always take note of the environment they’re in as well – is it clean and tidy? Are the staffs professional and well organized? These are all signs that you’re in good hands.

In North Carolina you can trust the extensive experience and professionalism from Dr. Robert Buchanan and his team. With years of experience delivering Botox treatments and touch-ups, you’ll be in good hands! Let us make you smile again – without the lines! – And look amazing!
