Breast Implant Facts or Fictions

Breast Implant Facts or Fictions

breast augmentationBreast implant (augmentation) surgery is one of the most popular and common plastic surgery procedures in the world. It’s interesting to recall, however, that approximately thirty years ago it was only the very select who could chose to enhance their décolletage.

If you’re considering breast implants but are a bit apprehensive, continue to read. Breast augmentation surgery has minimal recovery time and few side-effects and it isn’t as scary as it may sound. If you’re debating whether or not to get implants, it’s important to understand the distinctions between fact and fiction. So, here are a few implant fictions that may help you make a more informed decision:

If you have larger breasts you will be happy. If you are choosing implant surgery hoping it will make you happier, please reconsider. Implants can enhance your appearance, that’s true, but they are not guaranteed to give you a happier outlook on life.
Big breasts will make you look skinny. While it’s true that in some women larger breasts make their waist look smaller, generally speaking, breast implants won’t make you look skinny. The only real and successful “road to looking skinny” is incorporating a healthy diet and exercise routine.
Silicone implants aren’t safe. Yes, during the ‘80s and ‘90s there were problems with silicone implants leaking or breaking. However, with advanced technologies, today’s silicone implants are safe. Dr. Buchanan offers silicone shells filled with either salt water (saline) or cohesive silicone gel.
Breast implants look fake. This is one of the biggest myths surrounding breast augmentation surgery and it couldn’t be farther from the truth. Your implants will look natural because you will consult with Dr. Buchanan prior to deciding upon surgery to help you decide what shape, size and texture of implant would be ideal for your body size and type. We understand that you want to look proportionate and natural.
Breast implant surgery is safe, and you have choices to compliment your body type. To learn more, we invite you to call to schedule a consultation appointment with Dr. Buchanan, today:

Which Breast Implants Should You Get?

Breast ImplantOne of the most popular cosmetic surgeries, breast augmentation can get you as close to perfect breasts as is possible without photoshop. Changing the size and shape of the breast, this surgery can help you feel more balanced or more like yourself, especially after a drastic chance, such as pregnancy, drastic weight loss, an accident, or cancer. Every woman has different goals and different issue for breast augmentation. Whether you’re looking for reconstruction or something purely aesthetic, talk to your doctor about breast implants.

The Three Main Types of Implant Devices:

  1. Saline solution
  2. Silicone gel
  3. Composite filler

Silicone implants as well as saline implants both have a silicone outer shell, but they are completely different in nature.

  • Saline Breast Implants

Saline implants fill the breast sterile with salt water or saline solution. The silicone outer shell is filled with this biological saline, that is perfectly harmless. If the outer shell is ruptured, the saline solution will be absorbed into your body without posing any health risk (although if it does leak, you will need additional surgery to remove the silicon casing).

Saline implants are available for use in women above 18 years of age. They are perfectly safe and provide you with breasts that are full and round.

  • Silicone Breast implants

If you opt for silicone implants, the breast is filled with silicone gel. Because it is a thick and sticky fluid, it gives your breasts a more natural look than saline solution implants do. With these implants, your breasts will look bold and perky. You will feel more alive, especially because your breasts will feel more natural.

Silicone implant is available for use in women 22 and older. As with saline implants, they are safe.

Benefits of Breast Augmentation

While each woman has her own reason for breast augmentation, there are many possible benefits of the surgery, such as:

  • Improved self-esteem and a higher level of confidence.
  • Regained feeling of youth.
  • Satisfying look to your body.
  • Corrected shape and size after breast feeding or weight loss.
  • A natural and full look.

Book your appointment at the Center of Plastic Surgery today to discuss with a doctor which implants can give you some or all of the above benefits!

How to Avoid Rippling After Having Breast Implants

Although a lot of women all over the world have benefited greatly from breast implants, it has also its own set of possible risks and complications, one of which is rippling. Here at our North Carolina breast enhancement surgery practice, breast implant rippling or wrinkling is one of the most common concerns of women who seek Dr. Buchanan’s expert breast augmentation services.

By and large, rippling (particularly seen on the outer edge of the underarm) is not an unusual occurrence after having either silicone or saline implants. It largely has to do with the following:

  • When the breast implant is too large. This is often referred to as traction rippling and can happen in both saline and silicone implants. When the implant is too large, the connective tissues and skin tend to strained against the large implant which in turn results to the rippling appearance.
  • When the saline breast implant is not filled up enough. This type of rippling is known as full rippling .

Fortunately, you and your plastic surgeon can come up with an individualized breast augmentation plan that will help avoid or minimize rippling. Generally, the following steps can be done:

  • Although rippling can happen in both types of implants, it is more common in saline and/or textured implants. Thus, it may be best to choose smooth and appropriately-sized implants.
  • If you choose to have saline implants, it may be best to put them underneath the muscle as the muscle can help obscure the wrinkling that can occur.
  • Don’t be too skinny and don’t gain too much weight either.

Now that you already know what to do to avoid rippling, get in touch with us to learn more about rippling in parallel to your current body frame and preferences.  We are located at 209 Hospital Drive, Suite 202, Highlands, NC.  Call us at 828-526-3783 or fill out this contact form to schedule an initial consultation.
