The world was caught by surprise when actress Angelina Jolie revealed in a New York Times op-ed article that she had decided to undergo preventive double mastectomy where both her nipples and breast tissues were removed. The final process involved placement of breast implants, like the ones used in North Carolina breast reconstruction by Dr. Buchanan. This decision was made by Jolie after finding out that she had an 87 percent risk of getting breast cancer.
A Proactive Approach
“My doctors estimated that I had an 87 percent risk of breast cancer and a 50 percent risk of ovarian cancer, although the risk is different in the case of each woman,” the actress wrote. “Once I knew that this was my reality, I decided to be proactive and to minimize the risk as much as I could. I made a decision to have a preventive double mastectomy.”
