Why Liposuction Remains So Popular

Why Liposuction Remains So Popular

Liposuction Highlands & Asheville, NCIt seems like with most anything there are trends that come and go. However, in the world of plastic surgery, good procedures that work well safely stay for a long time. Liposuction is one of those and has remained a popular procedure amongst patients for decades, and it’s definitely here to stay. So, why has liposuction remained so popular?

It Gives Patients Real Results

With summer just around the corner, if you haven’t already thought about getting your body in the perfect shape for swimsuit season, it’s not too late. If you are overweight, lifestyle and eating habit modification is the first step. (See Dietary Advice.) If, however, you are already at a reasonable weight but just have localized fat, liposuction is the ideal treatment to consider. In fact, liposuction is not a weight loss method. It is for people at a healthy weight but just have some stubborn fat around their neck, abdomen, flanks, thighs, knees or other specific areas that they can’t get to go away.By suctioning the fat from these areas, liposuction gives patients real results.

It Treats Several Parts of the Body

Another great reason why patients love liposuction so much is that it can be used for multiple specific areas. Do you have fat on your back that you want to get rid of? Liposuction can do the trick. Need to get rid of that fat around your abdomen? Liposuction is the thing for you. Liposuction can also help get rid of fat on the buttocks, arms, thighs, neck, love handles, and knees. Of course, if you have fat in more than a few specific areas or more generalized fat, then liposuction is not the answer, weight loss or something like Zerona, a non surgical laser, similar but better than CoolSculpting, is what is needed.

It is Safe and Recovery is Rapid

When done properly by an expert surgeon liposuction has very few risks and recovery to normal activities is only a day or so. The most common problem is slight irregularity, lack of complete elimination of the problem, mild bruising and some prolonged swelling. Except for the bruising, these are rare. The bruising, however, can be covered with camouflage cosmetics. Unfortunately, because the problems are usually minimal and the recovery rapid, many non surgeon and inexperienced physicians have started doing liposuction. This has markedly increased the risks all the way to severe irregularity, burns, skin loss, severe infection and, even, death. Therefore, it is imperative that, if you are considering liposuction, you select a Plastic Surgeon who has been doing the procedure for many years and has a history of excellent results. (Dr. Buchanan has beed performing liposuction since it first came to this hemisphere from Europe and even helped develop many of the safety standards used today by most plastic surgeons.)

Stick Your Neck Out Without Feeling Self-Conscious: Liposuction for the Neck

Liposuction There are certain parts of your body that you expect to show signs of aging faster than others like the skin on your face. Luckily with non-invasive treatments like skin rejuvenation, IPL, fillers, and botox, you can reverse most of these changes and look like your younger self once again. As one part of your body that shows equally as much age but is often forgotten about, your neck needs just as much love as your face. If your neck has started to accumulate fat and make you look like you have a turkey’s neck, then you may want to consider getting liposuction of the neck. Read on to learn more about this simple, in office surgical procedure with rapid recovery.

What Is Liposuction of the Neck?

Traditionally, liposuction is done on areas of the body like the buttocks, abdomen, and upper thighs to get rid of stubborn fat. However, liposuction can also be done on the neck to get rid of excess fat that has started to accumulate due over time. By removing this excess fat with liposuction, you can get more taut results and look like your younger self.

What Are Results Like?

We have performed neck liposuction on patients from as young as in their twenties to those all the way in their sixties and seventies. Remember that the younger you are, the more resilient your skin is going to be – meaning it will contract better, thus looking younger. However, if you are a little older, even if the skin does not contract completely, your profile, and especially your frontal view, will still look better. If this is not enough, we can perform neck liposuction along with a face and neck lift so that you can not only get rid of stubborn fat but excess skin as well.

What Is Recovery Like?

Recovery from any liposuction is rapid. You should be able to resume normal activity and return to work and social engagements with a little camouflage make-up immediately.

If you have stubborn fat around your neck and you would like to get rid of it, consider getting neck liposuction at the Center For Plastic Surgery. If the word “surgery” scares you, we also have an injectable treatment, Kybella®, that can get rid of under chin fat.

3 Considerations Before Liposuction

Before Liposuction Highlands, NCLiposuction is one of the best ways to get rid of stubborn areas of fat that just don’t seem to go away no matter how much you diet and exercise. By actually suctioning the fat from these areas,a procedure that can frequently be done under local anesthesia in the office, liposuction will give you an improved contour with minimal recovery. If you are thinking about liposuction, there are really 3 things to consider. Read on to learn more.

  1. Is the Fat Localized?

Liposuction is indicated for localized areas of fat. Most commonly this is under the chin, on the tummy, hips or flanks, around the knees or other isolated places. Although it can be used for multiple areas, when there are multiple places needing reduction, frequently weight loss or use of the Zerona fat melting laser is the best choice. If you are not sure, a consultation can define what is best.

  1. What is the Quality and Elasticity of Your Skin?

Liposuction works best if your skin si relatively tight and the elasticity is good. This allows your skin to contract with no wrinkling after the fat is removed. However, liposuction can be an excellent choice even in someone with moderately lax or excess skin. This can be especially true if the excess is below the chin or you are mainly concerned with looking good in clothes. In fact, in the early days of liposuction when the recommendation was to not do liposuction on anyone over 30, Dr Buchanan did the first procedure on someone over 60. Without clothes she had some loose skin still, but in slacks she no longer had the bulges she had had previously and she was one of the happiest patients he had after the procedure. Within a few years everyone was expanding the age restriction.

  1. What is Your Health?

Depending on your health, you may be more at risk for developing problems during or after surgery. If you have health conditions like diabetes, heart disease, or a blood disorder, make sure that you notify Dr. Buchanan during your initial consultation. Our number one priority at The Center For Plastic Surgery is to ensure that all of our patients have a safe and speedy surgery and recovery.

Getting liposuction is a great way to get rid of excess fat on your tummy, hips, flanks, or under the chin. To learn more about liposuction and whether or not you are a suitable candidate, contact The Center For Plastic Surgery today!

Deciding Between a Tummy Tuck and Liposuction for a Flatter Midsection

A flatter, firmer, and well-toned midsection is of the most common cosmetic goals of men and women who visit us here at our Highlands plastic surgery clinic. Majority of these patients have done their homework and have looked for information online regarding procedures that can possibly help them achieve such goals. During the initial consultation, these patients would often ask about which body-contouring procedures are ideal for them — should they go for liposuction or decide on a tummy tuck instead?

Although both procedures have the same end goal, they actually target a different set of cosmetic concerns. If you find yourself in the same boat as the aforementioned patients, read on below!

When to Decide on Liposuction

By and large, liposuction is ideal for concerns that has to do with localized pockets of excess fat such as the dreaded love handles and spare tires. The procedure can be done not only in the abdominal area but also in other areas of the body such as the neck, hips, upper arms, buttocks, and thighs.

The procedure is ideal for men and women who want to improve the appearance of their abdominal areas and have done both diet and exercise to get rid of the stubborn pockets of fat. In addition, liposuction works best if the patient is within their ideal body weight and have good skin turgor (the ability of the skin to change its shape and return to normal).

It should be noted, however, that liposuction doesn’t eliminate loose, sagging skin and doesn’t strengthen weakened abdominal muscles which often occurs following pregnancy and childbirth.

When to Decide on a Tummy Tuck

As mentioned earlier, liposuction won’t help you deal with sagging skin and weakened abdominal muscles. This is where a tummy tuck can prove to be beneficial.

Although there may be a variation in the surgical techniques used in a tummy tuck, the procedure is usually performed with a horizontal incision in the lower abdomen just above the pubic area. This makes it easier to be camouflaged when wearing bikinis and low-rise jeans. The excess skin is trimmed away and the abdominal muscles are tightened and repaired.

Combining a Tummy Tuck and Liposuction

If your cosmetic concerns has to do with excess fat, sagging skin, and weakened abdominal muscles, combining both a tummy tuck and liposuction can possibly be your best course of treatment.

Ultimately, it should be noted that both liposuction and a tummy tuck are not weight loss tools but rather body-contouring procedures that will help reshape a certain part of your body in proportion to other parts.

Will Fat Come Back After Liposuction?

Liposuction was 2013’s most popular procedure in plastic surgery! According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, liposuction went up by 16.3 percent last year from that of 2012. Here at our North Carolina plastic surgery practice, we have observed a similar trend as more men and women are showing keen interest in the procedure.

During initial consultations, one of the most common questions here at our practice concerning liposuction is whether or not the fat will come back in the treated area/s after the procedure. By and large, the results of liposuction are permanent. However, there’s a catch and we’ll explained it further below.

On Fat Cells and Their Ability to Change Shape

Each human body has a certain amount of fat cells and its distribution all over your body is already set once you reach adulthood. As you gain weight, these fat cells will expand and the opposite happens when you tend to lose weight.

When fat cells are removed via liposuction, they are permanently gone. However, the fat cells in the untreated areas may possibly expand once you gain weight following liposuction. Thus, the takeaway here is to make sure that you keep your body weight stable following liposuction and take steps to ensure that you are not going to gain a significant amount of weight. The ideal way to do this is through a combination of balanced diet and physical activity. You do not have to go vegan all the way or engage in long-distance running. Moderation is the key.

Ultimately, it should be noted that liposuction is not a weight loss tool but is rather a body-contouring procedure. It is also important to note that fat may return after liposuction in the untreated areas.
