JUVÉDERM VOLUMA™ XC is one of the newer facial fillers, having been released in early summer 2014. Before VOLUMA™ Dr. Buchanan had used RADIESSE® for about 10 years to correct age related volume loss in the face, lift the cheek and surrounding areas, erase the tear trough and sub orbital hollows, correct facial contours and add volume to the cheeks. He was, in fact, among the first to appreciate the rejuvenating advantages of filling these areas, returning the face to its youthful triangular shape rather than retaining an aged square look by injecting lower.
JUVÉDERM VOLUMA™ XC is a synthetic hyaluronic acid gel, a natural substance found throughout your body that is a precursor of collagen, the support layer of the skin. This synthetic product carries no risk of allergic reaction. It is extremely safe, with millions of injections of similar products yearly. It is heavier, smoother, more concentrated, more cross-linked, and lasts significantly longer than other hyaluronic acids. It is approved by the FDA for injection deep to fill the cheeks. It lasts an average of 24 months according to Allergan’s initial studies, though that is the shortest we have seen, having it last over 4 years in several patients. Because it does not attract water, it is ideal for use around the eyes. It is our preferred product for the areas above.
We have switched to JUVÉDERM VOLUMA™ for this as it is a hyaluronic acid and can be reversed (though we never saw a need to reverse RADIESSE®) if a problem arises, thus making it safer, and it lasts a third longer than RADIESSE®. Because it can disguise the early signs of aging so well and can substitute for a facelift if the changes are not too severe, it is the mainstay of Today’s Liquid Lift®. We significantly prefer it to Sculptra® because its results are immediate and it lasts as long or longer.
Since the youthful face is triangular, we began quite a number of years ago to approach the nasolabial and marionette folds from above, filling the cheek area to lift the tissues above the nasolabial and marionette areas thus reducing the folds. We reasoned that this was better than filling the folds since that only reduced the fold, doing nothing for the aging cheek and tended to make the face more square, one of the signs of aging. Others, obviously, thought the same, as Allergan, the developer of VOLUMA™, with its release is now teaching the same methods we have used for many years.
JUVÉDERM™ is not a single filler, but a family of fillers. When used together, the JUVÉDERM™ family of fillers usually lasts 2 years, however, some patients can still see results up to 4 years later.
We inject it in a Spa setting using either topical or regional nerve block numbing in addition to a numbing agent in the JUVÉDERM VOLUMA™ itself, making it as painless as we can. You can return to normal activities immediately. The most common problem is mild bruising that can last a few days. We try to reduce this by using where possible a very small blunt cannula type needle and encouraging your use of Arnica Montana and Bromelain (over the counter products, though we can provide them) or Pineapple juice peri-injection. If you do bruise, we can guide you in camouflage techniques using Jane Iredale® Mineral Make Up so you never have any down time.
We support Allergan’s Brilliant Distinctions Rewards Program that rewards points for products (Juvéderm®, Botox, SminMedica, Latisse, Kybella) allowing you to shop at Allergan’s Mall or receive discounts on products.
